Before Occupy, There Was Wisconsin

Before Occupy, There Was Wisconsin
Thu, 5/17/2012

In February and March of 2011, Kevin J. Miyazaki began photographing protesters in Madison, Wisconsin, an early precursor to the now historic events of Occupy Wall Street.

Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents gathered at their state capital building in Madison to protest Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill. The proposed bill would strip most of the state's public employees of their collective bargaining rights. Ironically, Wisconsin had been the first state in the union, in 1959, to grant collective bargaining rights to its employees. The bill was eventually passed, and was followed by a series of socially conservative reforms leveled by Governor Walker and Republican lawmakers. Over 900,000 residents of Wisconsin signed recall petitions against the governor, prompting a recall election against Democrat Tom Barrett on June 5, 2012.

Kevin J. Miyazaki set up a temporary sidewalk studio outside the capital and made portraits of protesters. "I was interested in putting an accurate face on those who were gathering in such great numbers to express their views," he said. "Governor Walker's spin was that many of the protesters were from out of state, and network television coverage too often focused on drum circle participants inside the capital building. In truth, the large crowds gathered outside in protest were average, proud Wisconsinites: union members and not, families, teachers, firefighters, students, farmers, small business owners and retirees."

Miyazaki is an editorial and fine art photographer who regularly photographs for many of the top magazines around the world. He lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The year 2020 has caused many white people to realize we live in a racist system. The Green New Deal is about systemic change for all, and deconstructing racism must be front and central in this agenda.

coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro, COVID-19 deaths, downplaying coronavirus

By infecting three of the world’s most right-wing leaders, the coronavirus underscored not only the incompetence and irresponsibility of their governments – but the truth that their brand of populism doesn't keep people safe.

COVID-19, corporate bailouts, corporate welfare, corporate destruction

Corporations are not "too big to fail" and, when they commit crimes, they are not "too big to jail." As David Whyte writes in his new book, "Ecocide: Kill the Corporation Before It Kills Us," the moment is now to rein in out-of-control corporate power.

The world has lost an incredible thinker and doer. I have lost an amazing friend. A void exists where before it was filled with David's optimism, humour and joy.
