In retrospect, it shouldn't be shocking that the guitarist from the Nineties' most Occupy-friendly band would re-emerge a decade later as a genuine folk hero for the nascent movement. Yet somehow, it's still pleasantly surprising how strong and relevant Morello's solo songwriting really is. He has written several would-be anthems for the movement, performed at Occupy camps around the world and just announced that he will be joining the Occupy Guitarmy, a group of 1,000 musicians marching from Bryant Park to Union Square in New York City on May Day. Naturally, the organizers have chosen Morello's own "World Wide Rebel Songs" to be part of the march. He is also helping to spread the word via Twitter, encouraging folks to join in whether with a "$25K Martin" or a "plastic Toys 'R Us model."
Overall, Morello is proving to be a case study in how to be a cultural ambassador for social justice movements without exploiting them in the process. We love you Tom, keep going.
