As the publisher of Occupy.com, I need to let you know that we’ve reached a critical juncture so that you—readers, activists, supporters—have an opportunity to help save our publication and organization.
The short of it is this: We need enough money on a monthly basis to cover our expenses and pay our staff. We are asking with an existential urgency to please contribute and help keep us operating.
For seven years, since the spring of 2012, our small team—who originally launched the Occupied Wall Street Journal, the movement’s flagship newspaper—have worked with a passionate and committed crew of domestic and international correspondents to bring readers news, investigations and insights through the critiques Occupy developed at Zuccotti Park.
Today, two of the top presidential contenders—Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren—built their national political followings from the momentum created by Occupy. And the people-powered, Democratic-Socialist platform of the most hopeful and courageous face of the U.S. Congress—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—embodies ideals voiced first and loudest at Occupy.
We have never peppered you with daily or weekly fundraising appeals. We have never used advertising on our site. We wanted to produce a hard-hitting online publication that was as clear of financial strings as the anti-corporate movement that birthed it.
We need basic funds on a monthly basis to sustain the editors, writers, journalists, designers and developers, who create fresh, informative, inspiring content and keep Occupy.com online everyday.
The average price of a cup of black coffee in the U.S. is $2.70. We simply need our readers to contribute monthly the equivalent of about five cups of coffee, ie. $15 per month, or more please if you can afford it. It’s that simple. Some of our readers have contributed for years well more than that.
One of our readers is a union member, who wrote to us that because he changed jobs he had to suspend his contributions, but now that he found work again, he was renewing his $15 per month contribution. This is the kind of heartfelt commitment we’re asking of each of our readers. And unlike that Americano, your donations are tax-deductible since we’re a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
From the streets Occupy cried out: “Another world is possible!” Today, with Democracy itself at stake, it’s critical that Occupy.com continue to project that vision of a better world, built on social justice for everyone.
If you value that vision, please contribute to sustaining it. You can do it for just five cups of coffee per month. Is it worth it to you? That’s the question. If so, here’s where you can make a monthly contribution. If not, then we wish you well and thank the generous donors who’ve supported us over the years.
