At last count, there were 247 million Americans who identified themselves as Christians. Contrary to shallow perception, Christians are by no means a homogeneous bunch. Progressive and conservative people of faith find support in scripture for a huge range of deeply held convictions on almost every hot-button social issue. But believers of all stripes seem to agree on this: that Old and New Testament passages alike call on people who have plenty to share with those who don’t. Why then, given the potential volume of the collective Christian voice, has there been such a muted response from the faith community to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression? Despite what cynics say, the church writ large has a strong track record of mustering the faithful to every corner of the globe in order to help people who are hurting. And today we have an opportunity to do the same right here in our own backyard. As filmmakers who are all people of faith in some form or another, we offer this meditation from scripture and invite you to consider with us an overused but no less relevant question, “What would Jesus do?”
