May Day NYC: Postcards from a City on Strike

May Day NYC: Postcards from a City on Strike
Fri, 5/11/2012

Michael Alexander Gould-Wartofsky is a photographer, author, educator and social scientist from New York City. His photography and videography have appeared in The Times' City Room, The Guardian, The Nation and the books "The 99%: How Occupy Wall Street is Changing America.".

“I came out this May Day, not only as a photographer, but as a worker, an educator, a New Yorker, and a 99 Percenter," he said. "I aimed my camera to occupy the eye, to capture a decisive moment in the movement, and to tell the story of May Day - our day - as I saw it unfold in the streets, in the parks and on the picket line. In this, I also hoped to help us re-imagine and reclaim a piece of people's history: a holiday for the 99% which was supposed to have been forgotten, but has been brought back to life by this alliance between Occupy Wall Street, organized labor, and the immigrant freedom movement. This photo gallery is intended as a tribute and a testament: to the fighting spirit of Occupy, to the dignity of working people, and to the desperation of "the 1%" who have come to rely on riot police to defend their power. The images here speak of a power of a different sort: a power in movement.”

The only thing overshadowing the evil of the regime is its incompetence. And the people are only just beginning to realize the power we have.
