What's Your Dream Job?

What's Your Dream Job?
Fri, 5/4/2012

After we leave school behind, work is what defines us. Not all of us are lucky enough to do what we love - most of us work to live, not live to work. The Western fever dream of upward mobility has left most of us bereft. So the question "What's Your Dream Job?" seems like a question we last answered in grade school.

But filmmakers from Occupy Toronto wandered their encampment and did just that, asking activists to envision their ideal role in society. Their answers are illuminating, and hopeful, as many consider service to their communities to be the most fulfilling role. (Keep an eye out for Occupy.com featured artist Craig Nesbit, who talks about his work in the mental health field.)

But a conversation about the value of work always comes back to income inequality and the rigged 1%-run system that sustains it.

"The average CEO now makes 450 times what the lowest-paid person in his company makes," one Toronto Occupier puts it bluntly. "That inequality in how wealth is distributed in this society has left the middle class shrinking. It's just not right."

If Trump indeed tanks your 401(k) to make himself and his friends even richer, the opposition party should make that the centerpiece of their attack heading into next year’s election.

The burgeoning pro-democracy, anti-Trump movement known as 50501 expects to drive tens and possibly hundreds of thousands to protest in 1,000 cities and towns on Saturday.

The only thing overshadowing the evil of the regime is its incompetence. And the people are only just beginning to realize the power we have.
