Act Out! [102] - Women on the Front Lines & The Spirit of Standing Rock

Act Out! [102] - Women on the Front Lines & The Spirit of Standing Rock
Wed, 3/1/2017 - by Eleanor Goldfield

“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass.” — Maya Angelou

That quote is one of those wake-up-and-stay-woke messages of inspiration that beautifully encapsulates women on the front lines. And this week on Act Out, that’s our focus. Starting ahead of the curve from International Women’s Day, we discuss an event happening in Selma, Alabama. The Sisters in Synergy action will march with the annual Selma commemoration in an action that seeks to highlight not only the continued fight for racial justice in this country but the role of black women in that fight and many others for freedom and justice. Often present but rarely acknowledged, black women will lead this march and ask allies to join with them, but not to stand in front of them.

The Sisters in Synergy organization is also concerned with community organizing, particularly around Ubuntu Principles. We’ll dive into what that means and why you should get into Ubuntu. Next up, let’s talk International Women’s Day and why that day is WAY out of sync with reality. However, we can use that to our advantage – if we get real and get to organizing in our own communities. Another large scale general strike is planned, which, if you remember from episode 100, represents just one day off. Again, if we use that day wisely – to build, to fight, to get uncomfortable and to become ungovernable – it will be a day off well spent. Finally, Mohawk professor and filmmaker Paulette Moore sits down with us to discuss her latest documentary, "The Spirit of Standing Rock."

This last month has shown America that society will gladly tolerate vigilante violence, provided a vigilante chooses the right target.

President-elect Donald Trump isn’t just appointing incompetent buffoons to his Cabinet, but deeply immoral individuals who are completely lacking in family values.

Biden cared more about the appearance of having an independent DOJ untainted by politics than he did about holding an unrepentant criminal ex-president accountable.

The American people clearly spoke, and the drubbing Democrats received requires looking beyond just issue polls, voting patterns, campaign strategy, or get-out-the-vote tactics.

The recent decisions by two of the most influential national newspapers of record to not publish their endorsements of Vice President Kamala Harris says a lot about how seriously they take Trump’s threats to democracy and his promises of vengeance against his enemies.

If the Democrats’ theme of 2017 was Resistance, the theme for Democrats in 2025 needs to instead be Opposition — and these two GOP senators may be the models to emulate.

The country has never moved as close to the course it took under Benito Mussolini as it is doing now — and even if Meloni is not a neo-fascist politician, she has put herself in a position to appeal to and broaden fascism's political base.

On the eve of the historic November vote, it seems important to ask: What's wrong with men, how did we get here, and can we change this?

As Trump’s campaign grows increasingly bizarre, his team appears to be more tightly controlling his movements and carefully scripting his public appearances to minimize the negative impact his erratic behavior may have on undecided voters in swing states.
