Act Out! [109] - War for Profit, Art for Peace & Science for Justice

This week on Act Out!, making bank off of death is as American a pastime as baseball – and just as media friendly. Yes, Trump is trigger-happy and in the money, but isn’t it curious that he wasn’t deemed presidential until he launched an airstrike on an already battered and beaten nation? The media was so quick to fall in line behind our dumbass-in-chief that they practically tripped over each other on the way to kissing his pale arse.

In this episode we’ll take a look at the media’s affinity for manufacturing consent when they should be manufacturing dissent. We go back to the second Gulf War and see how desperately the media wanted us to invade Iraq – despite the now-common knowledge that we had no business doing so. Meanwhile, the Trump dynasty continues to run a kleptocracy from the confines of the White House. But as long as the bombs keep flying, the media will keep smiling.

Next up, as James Baldwin so eloquently put it: "The poets (by which I mean all artists) are finally the only people who know the truth about us. Soldiers don’t. Statesmen don’t. Priests don’t. Union leaders don’t. Only poets.” In light of that, we talk to activist artist Mohammad Hamza about his work that highlights the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice and the men and women in that fight.

Finally, we take a look at the March for Science – not so much the march itself but the goals and ideas it set forth, and why it’s far from enough. With help from the Zapatistas, we offer a critique and a demand of the scientific community as we face gross stupidity and injustice in this country.

This last month has shown America that society will gladly tolerate vigilante violence, provided a vigilante chooses the right target.

President-elect Donald Trump isn’t just appointing incompetent buffoons to his Cabinet, but deeply immoral individuals who are completely lacking in family values.

Biden cared more about the appearance of having an independent DOJ untainted by politics than he did about holding an unrepentant criminal ex-president accountable.

The American people clearly spoke, and the drubbing Democrats received requires looking beyond just issue polls, voting patterns, campaign strategy, or get-out-the-vote tactics.

The recent decisions by two of the most influential national newspapers of record to not publish their endorsements of Vice President Kamala Harris says a lot about how seriously they take Trump’s threats to democracy and his promises of vengeance against his enemies.

This last month has shown America that society will gladly tolerate vigilante violence, provided a vigilante chooses the right target.

If the Democrats’ theme of 2017 was Resistance, the theme for Democrats in 2025 needs to instead be Opposition — and these two GOP senators may be the models to emulate.

The country has never moved as close to the course it took under Benito Mussolini as it is doing now — and even if Meloni is not a neo-fascist politician, she has put herself in a position to appeal to and broaden fascism's political base.
