This week on Act Out!, as we inch closer to the election and find ourselves squarely in debate season, let's take a look at why we CAN'T have a look at anything outside the two-party paradigm. Next up, Yoav Litvin shows us the power of two in both art and activism through his latest collaborative work, 2 Create. And finally, from Nogales to Nogales, these activists are connecting the dots between U.S. foreign policy, the drug war and migration in Central and South America with a series of non-violent actions – happening this weekend.

The Rs and Ds, having strikingly similar agendas, own and control our political system. The Rs primarily represent the interests of the rich, while the Ds primarily represent the interests of the middle class and rich. The poor, of course, have no representation today. (Liberals today, oddly enough, so strongly believe in the success of our deregulated capitalism that they think there is no need for poverty relief.)

Trump/Clinton have strikingly similar ideologies, with both pandering to middle class voters. Here's where things get sticky for the Democrats. The Dem voting base had long consisted of the middle class and poor, for the common good. Bill Clinton split that base wide apart. In Gore vs. Bush, the middle class picked Bush. The poor, and those who get why it mattered, voted for Obama in hopes that he could launch a legit discussion about our poverty crisis. Liberals aren't interested, Dems in Congress only worsened conditions for many (esp. the elderly poor and the disabled). Then Democrats picked the most anti-poor Dem pol they could dig up as their 2016 candidate. Gee, how do you think this will all turn out?

In many European countries, the far right holds or shares power. Democracy is in crisis.

If Trump indeed tanks your 401(k) to make himself and his friends even richer, the opposition party should make that the centerpiece of their attack heading into next year’s election.
