The Revolution is Love

The Revolution is Love

There is a famous quote by the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara: "At the risk of sounding ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by feelings of love."

This sentiment is what filmmakers Velcrow Ripper and Ian MacKenzie capture in their short film, "The Revolution is Love,” a monologue by the writer and thinker Charles Eisenstein (hyperlink: http://www.realitysandwich.com/occupy_wall_street_no_demand_big_enough) interspersed with scenes from the Occupy Wall Street encampment last Fall in Zuccotti Park. “Joint consumption doesn’t create intimacy,” he says in the film. “Only joint creativity and gifts create intimacy and connection. You have such gifts.”

After going viral last year, garnering a quarter of a million page views, the film brought attention to Eisenstein’s ideas, which prize human connection over profit. “Love is the felt experience of connection to another being,” he says. “An economist says 'more for you is less for me.' But the lover knows that more for you is more for me too.”

“This short film was my attempt to share the perspective offered by visionary author Charles Eisenstein,” said MacKenzie, whose latest film (hyperlink: http://sacred-economics.com) also weaves in Eisenstein’s philosophy. “Early on in the Occupy movement, he was able to correctly identify that the movement is not about specific demands. It is about aligning ourselves toward a new way of being. To have the film go viral was confirmation to me that the people are ready to hear and embrace this message.”

In striving for a fair and just economic system, this film reminds us that revolution may be conceived by the mind, but it is ultimately won by the heart.
